Joe is a self-taught artist. He began carving in 1974 and since then has produced many yellow and red cedar wall carvings, talking sticks, totem poles, masks, and rattles. Joe recently completed a course in Advanced Design with Robert Davidson, and he worked with George Rammel at Capilano College on bronze casting techniques, in 2003.

Joe is a member of the Musqueam Nation and was born and raised on the Musqueam Reserve in Vancouver. He is married, and has two daughters and a grandchild.

Joe started carving in wood as a teenager, perfecting his skills on small pieces, and today he has established an excellent reputation as a fine carver of totem poles, talking sticks, bentwood boxes and plaques
