PRIZE FOR THE FREEFOM TO CREATE

Deadline: 31 October 2008

Typology: every kind of artistic activity supporting human rights

A foundation from Singapore together with a foundation from Uk is proud to launch the inaugural Freedom to Create Prize. This international prize will recognise artists who use their talents to promote human rights, including the freedom of expression, empathy, equality and understanding

In all societies, the development of the arts has been a sign of culture and light. Yet not all governments provide citizens with the ‘freedom to create’ needed to foster innovation, commerce and prosperity. Some governments harass and impoverish their citizens, steal resources, stifle entrepreneurship and undermine human ingenuity and hope. In these societies, art can play an important role in giving a voice to those who are denied opportunity and resources.

Freedom to Create Prize will consist of three categories. The main prize will be open to individuals or artistic groups in all creative fields including the visual and performance arts, music, crafts, design and literature. The winner of this award will receive US$ 50,000.

Freedom to Create Youth Prize will be open to artists who are under the age of 18 with the winner receiving US$ 25,000 scholarship and advocacy prize. The final category, the Freedom to Create Imprisoned Artist Prize, will focus on artists who are currently imprisoned for their artwork. The winner will receive US$ 25,000 towards supporting their family, paying legal costs and supporting advocacy efforts.

This is not an art prize. It will not simply judge the skill of the artist but recognise how the artist has used their work in speaking out in defence of human rights and freedom of expression. The inaugural prize will be a unique and significant award and will be judged by a panel of eminent artists, and human rights experts and philanthropists.

Submissions for the prize close on 31 October, 2008

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF SCULPTURE - ITALY

Deadline: 31st of July for the application – 10th of

September for sending the model

Typology: Sculpture

In order to enhance the bovine race and the local stone,

that ever since past times have represented important

resources for our territory, Gal (Azione Ossola) in

collaboration with APA Novara and VCO (Provincial

association of breeders), and Assograniti VCO, are promoting

an international competition of sculpture: “ stone and its

pastoral muse”, using local stone the “Serizzo

Antigorio” in the Verbano Cusio Ossola territory.

Domodossola.

SUBJECT:

The artist considering the stone material used for the

creation of the sculpture the “Serizzo Antigorio”,

should accomplish the subject: “ Bruna Alpine” breed of

cow in its real size.

The “Pastoral Muse” can be freely interpreted in its

historical and social context : as a companion of man,

mother and woman in the rural environment, as a creator of

resources, as a metaphor of fertility, maternity, a bearer

of austere, intimistic love and so on..

Surrounded by the Alps , the Verbano Cusio Ossola

territory, is considered to be a land of nature. Here the

harmonic sense of creation, has shown its expression

through giant rocks, coloured flora and mysterious fauna.

The lakes Orta,Mergozzo and Maggiore, mirrors of the sky,

have represented elements of communication and exchanges

from the Celts until nowaday.

This territory, full of emotions and traditions , alternates

the four seasons, following the spontaneous beat of the

earth, offering to residents and tourists its blooming

semplicity.

It is in this area that men, since remote times, have

connected and related their existence, with the expression

of their surroundings, considering nature, not only as a

landscape, but as a faithful accomplice, companion and

vital lymph.

Since long ago, farming, was wide spread, many cows

populated meadows. In the Ossola territory, it was not

difficult to find numerous dairies spread around in small

hamlets: these dairies became a fundamental meeting point

for breeders, peasants, shepherds and families. Dairies were

the places for the artisanal production of milk and its

derivates: “pearls of the local economy”

If the “Bruna Alpine” breed of cow, was the “

Pastoral Muse”, protagonist with its soft movements of the

first resource in Ossola, at the same time, a geological

resource, with strong and majestic features, was

characterizing another working aspect, even more important:

the extraction and processing of stone.

The first stone-masons, with the only instruments at their

disposal: cudgels and chisels, transformed a raw block into

a great hand-made piece of work, which was useful and

essential for daily life. (houses, cowsheds, hay-lofts,

roads, but also artistic work, such as churches and chapels)

With untiring repeated perseverance, men beat the stone,

a metallic tinkling echoed among the montains, beating out

the time of work, shared together with mothers and

companions through ringing cow-bells.

The perseverance of this work, difficulties and sacrifices

of these professions, surely weren’t forgotten and put

into a disheartened oblivium, but they represented the

seeds of today’s fruits.

characterized the course of the “mountain man”.

2006 with the one evening show titled Anonymous Drawings.

Due to the huge amount of international submissions and the

positive public response, the seventh edition, Anonymous

Drawings 7, will take place at August 25/26 2007. Since

blütenweiss from June on is a nomad-project without an

own, permanent exhibition space, the Anonymous Drawings 7 -

show will be host at a different venue.

person in the background in favour of their product. A

priori for the evaluation of the work on this evening is not

the name and the biography of the individual artist, but the

work actually shown.

Bluetenweiss reserves the right to choose which works will

be exhibited; the priorities, however, are formal, content

and qualitative variety. The artists will receive 60% of the

sales price. In case of a sale the artist will be informed

via email directly after the show.

Unsold works will be returned to the artist at the latest in

October 2007.

The McIntosh Gallery would like to let you know about an important new
initiative. The new Copyright Act of Canada requires the McIntosh
Gallery to update all copyright agreements with those artists whose
work is represented in its 2,800 piece collection. This will allow McIntosh
Gallery staff to determine the artists' wishes concerning the
reproduction, exhibition and administration relevant to the art works.
Permission to use images of the work will enhance public access to the
McIntosh Gallery Collection and help to avoid wear and tear from direct
handling of the art. It will also encourage research and awareness of
the artwork particularly in new electronic media contexts.

It would be most helpful if you could provide contact information for
any of the artists in the list which follows or direct me to an

The Ravens and Eagles Gathering

March 31st to April 2nd

Today, few art forms in the world attain the notoriety or stature of instant recognition. Northwest Coast Native Art does.  Classed with such ancient art forms as Egyptian and Roman art Northwest Coast Native Art is one of the strongest and most definable art forms known to man.  Imagine though, unlike the Egyptians and Romans, we are fortunate to view this art while it is still a living art form.

Here is your opportunity!  Visit the Ravens and Eagles Gathering at Nanoose community centre this March 31st to April 2nd .  Participants of this juried event include Eli Milton, master toolmaker; Henry Green, Master carver; Gordon Dick, Gold/Silversmith and many other artists  from throughout British Columbia.

Come and see artists at work!!  This year we will have sculptors, painters, carvers, toolmakers and other specialty artists in attendance and working on-site.  Not only are many of the artists in attendance not usually in the public eye but also this will be a unique opportunity for the public to see projects that may otherwise go unseen.  There will be a wealth of knowledge at the gathering and questions are always welcome.

This event was such a success last year that an additional day and more events have been added this year.   We are excited to be hosting a fashion show with beautiful, hand-made coutures by local artist Bill Helin.  Don’t miss it!  Friday, March 31st at 7:30pm, at Nanoose Community Centre.

The Ravens and Eagles Gathering is proud to be part of the 16th annual Brant Wildlife Festival.  Admission is $5 at the door.  All proceeds will benefit the Brant Festival, Girl Guides and Native Youth programs.  For more information please contact Jeremy at Coastal Carvings Fine Art Gallery in Coombs, BC  250-954-0554.

For a very informative and interactive visit with both master carvers and the ‘up and coming’ talent stop by the Ravens and Eagles Gathering.  Dates:  Friday, March 31st  , 11am- 9pm (fashion show @ 7:30);  Saturday, April 1st, 10am- 5pm;  Sunday, April 2nd 10am- 4pm.  Location:  Nanoose community centre, 2925 Northwest Bay Rd, Nanoose, BC.

LUMINARA VICTORIA LANTERN FESTIVAL RETURNS!

On Saturday July 23, Victoria's favorite night of light, magic, creativity and community returns. Luminara Victoria 2005 promises to be a fantastic event, filled with beauty and wonder, excitement and spectacle! The pathways and waterways of Beacon Hill Park and historic St. Ann's Academy will sparkle, with handmade lantern displays of every imaginable design enhanced by dazzling performances of live music, giant puppets, stiltwalkers, dancers and acrobats. The magic of Luminara is in the discovery and the delight of surprises that await you around the next bend.

Luminara is all about participation! Everyone is encouraged to make and bring a lantern to carry, dress in costume and get into the spirit of the event. Those who want to get really involved can volunteer or sign on as artists or as interactive artists.

Now in its sixth year, Luminara 2005 will light up the night like no other event the city has ever seen. This year is even more special than ever, as it is the event that almost didn't happen! Early in 2005, event presenters made the difficult decision to put Luminara on hiatus for one year while funding issues and other difficulties affecting the longevity of Luminara were examined. The outcry from the community was immense, and so was the show of support, and thankfully, the decision was reversed! Luminara organizers are immensely grateful to everyone who sent in words of encouragement and appreciation, proving that Luminara truly is a celebration of community spirit.

Art Bank to make major purchase of Aboriginal art

Ottawa, 4 November 2002 - The Canada Council Art Bank is planning to purchase $100,000 worth of Aboriginal art to enhance its collection and celebrate its 30th anniversary and the 45th anniversary of the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Art Bank, which has the largest collection of contemporary Canadian art in the world, was created in 1972 to support the efforts of Canadian visual artists and to provide public sector institutions with the opportunity to rent Canadian art for their offices and public spaces. The Art Bank includes some 18,000 artworks, and currently has over 6,000 works rented to more than 200 government and corporate clients.

Director Victoria Henry said the Art Bank will be looking for both contemporary and traditional Aboriginal art, including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and fine crafts. She said the Art Bank's collection currently includes works by a number of Aboriginal artists, but that she would like to see a lot more.

"We want our collection to better reflect the outstanding work done by First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists across the country," she said. "We receive numerous requests for Aboriginal art from our rental clients, and it has been a challenge to meet the demand. A special purchase of Aboriginal art is a wonderful way to both celebrate this anniversary year and increase the number of works by Aboriginal artists in our collection."

Aboriginal artists are being asked to submit a slide or photograph of the work they would like to sell to the Art Bank, as well as a resumé (if available) and a description of the work. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2003. The jury will meet in February to select the works to be purchased. Submissions should be sent to Suzanne Wolfe, Inventory Administrator, Canada Council Art Bank, 921 St. Laurent Boulevard, P.O. Box 1047, Ottawa, Ontario K1P 5V8.

In addition to the special purchase of Aboriginal art, the Art Bank is planning a general call for submissions for the spring of 2003, with a deadline of June 1.

More information about the Art Bank and its purchase program is available on the Art Bank's website at www.artbank.ca.
