Is the oldest tourist attraction in Greater Vancouver. In 1889, Scotsman George Mackay
built the bridge with the help of two local natives, August Jack Khahtsahlano and his
brother Willie. The Coast Salish first called it the "laughing bridge" because
its ropes whistled in the wind. in 1993, Nancy Stibbard, the present Owner, commissioned a
totem pole to honor elder Mary Khahtsahlano. Well into her late 90's Mary crossed the
suspension bridge to walk in the forest. Today, visitors can cross a new 137 m span
swinging 70 m over the Capilano River and visit a tiny forested park. Native carvers
periodically work on site. Salmon barbecues are scheduled in summer. Information is
available from the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Park, 3735 Capilano road, North
Vancouver, BC, (604) 985-7474
